| A Nezumi-Shino tea bowl by Shino Artist Nakajima Masao (1922-present); the daring lines and rugged texture, in addition to the bold geometric patterns visible through the thick, pitted red glaze make this bowl quite outstanding. The artists’ stamp is impressed beside the Kodai, and it comes in the original signed and stamped wooden box. The large bowl measures 5 inches (13 cm) in diameter, just over 3 inches (8 cm) to the rim and is in perfect condition, reminiscent of the famous Momoyama period Momiji Chawan. Masao studied under Hineno Sakuzo, and has been displayed at the Nitten, Asahi Modern Ceramics Exhibition and Asahi Ceramics Exhibition where he received top prize and was later honored as a judge. He served as the first head of the Mino Traditional Ceramic Craft Collective and was granted the title of Dento Kogei-shi, or Traditional Craftsman, by the Japanese government. He was also recipient of the Kato Koheiji prize among others. He is known for Shino, Oribe, Seto and hikidashi wares, covering the gamut of Mino pottery. | |||||||||||||
