| A stylish faceted piece by Toita Takatsugu enclosed in the original signed wooden box. A milk white glaze thinly veils the rough dark clay, windows of dark brown showing through about the base and side. It appears to have been formed on a wheel, then shaped, with standing flanges where the sides were cut away. The chunky piece is just less than 8 inches (20 cm) tall, and is in perfect condition. Takatsugu was born in Toyama in 1943, and began his training at the age of 23 under Yoshida Kozo, after which moving on to study under Ogawa where his work attracted the attention of Living National Treasure Shimizu Uichi, under whom he apprenticed for several years. He has been displayed at the Nihon Dento Kogei Ten (National Traditional Crafts Exhibition), and the National Ceramics Exhibition (Nihon Dento Togei Ten) where he received several awards. One of his works was presented by the Japanese Government to former American President Jimmy Carter among other VIP names. | |||||||||||
