ABOUT THE SHIP:
Tale of the Foochow Sea Junk began in the middle of the 19th Century whereas tiger hunting was common in the orient, for the animals' skins were greatly prized. One day, a group of hunters near Foochow, China, found that a great serpent with two huge horns protruding from his head had wriggled into their tiger trap. The greedy hunters saw that they could make their fortune by selling the rare beast, so they put him into their junk and set sail for home. Once out at sea, they were hit by a fierce thunderstorm that threatened to capsize the ship. The serpent took advantage of the confusion and slipped into the hold, where a large rice cargo was stored. There the beast feasted on the rice until he had eaten it all. By that time, he had grown large enough to fill the entire hold of the ship. Petrified, the crew abandoned their junk.
