ABOUT THE SHIP:
A fierce Nor'easter was brewing on a fateful Christmas night in 1752 when the Palatine, loaded with Dutch immigrants, mets its tragic end. It had been supposed to land in Philadelphia, actually it was near Block Island, off the coast of Rhone Island. Suddenly there was a mighty jolt, the Palatine had run aground on one of the sandbars. The passengers were frightened, the sailors downright cowardly. As if by plan, the crewmen piled into the lifeboats and cast off, leaving the Dutch passengers alone on the sandbar to face yet another Nor'easter. All was not lost for the plucky immigrants, though, for the people of Block Island, full of the Christmas spirit, launched rescue ships for the stranded Hollanders. All were saved .... except one.
