This fine Mongolian Thangka painting is a very unusual portrayal of a Bodhissatva. He is sitting on a mule, which is also quite uncommon, holding on to a silver-colored disc likely to represent the moon.
Around the Bodhissatva we see various other deities on horseback, reminiscent of Lokapala, as well as several other animals and even a lion dog. Throning on top is the rain god, the blue Vajrapani, also set against a flaming aureole.

This expressive Mongolian Thangka painting depicts the Dharmapala Begtse, one of the Keepers of Teachings. Begtse, god of war, is a wrathful emanation of the fire element. He was integrated from Mongolian Tantrism into the pantheon of Vajrayana Buddhism. He is wearing solid armor and his significant sword has a lobster-shaped handle.
