The white marble is an advantage here, making Hayes Leekya's signature on the horse's belly more noticeable and legible. An August, 2004 article in New Mexico Magazine's annual "Native American" issue, featured Hayes making horses with inlaid turquoise hooves, very similar to this one, and he comments that of all the animals he carves, "Horses are my favorites." He also says it takes him about four hours to carve a horse. The article also mentions that before ...click for details

Some objects are just so beautiful, they please the eye whether they are used as intended or lie upon a dresser as an art object. That's how I feel about this gorgeous piece. It's designed as a woman's hair pin and certainly would be stunning worn in someone's hair, but I've long enjoyed admiring it in my studio, simply because of the wonderful design and delicate placement of the copper beads upon the silver. I am very drawn to this piece and have, for years, loved just look ...click for details

While these would be worn as a prized vintage glass necklace, this lovely Czechoslovakian glass bead necklace (its original paper label is still intact!) has a unique history: they're actually Mardi Gras beads, thrown in a New Orleans parade sometime ca. 1920 - 30. A dealer friend of mine happened to purchase this piece, and one other I will have up for sale, during a visit to New Orleans the spring before Hurricane Katrina hit, from a vintage clothing shop that had "just a few" of ...click for details

Signed "Mela" on the bottom of her feet, presumably by the artist but perhaps by the girl who loved and played with her, this is the most incredibly realistic, handmade Navajo doll I've ever encountered. The Sioux and heavily beaded Plains dolls are seen at shows and featured in books, but Navajo dolls such as these? I have never held such an example in my hands.
