English Waste Bowl

English soft paste waste bowl dating from the first half of the 19th century. Ruffled rim accented with black paint. Border of leaves and vines is beautiful and soft in green and purple. Excellent condition. Some crazing and minor staining. Some loss of paint on rim. No chips or cracks. Dimensions: 3" h x 6.25" diameter. Soft paste porcelain is created from a mixture of white clay and frit-a glassy substance. Soft paste can be recognized by it's off-white hue. Waste bowls have been used by tea drinkers for centuries. The cold tea remnants were poured into the waste bowl before pouring more hot tea. More recently waste bowls have been used for discarded leaves and tea bags.
