Estimated from 19th century, antique Ainu makiri Makiri sheath knife with exquisite carving in the ainu motif and antler' toggle. Overall condition is very good with fine patina.
The sheaths of makir knives were carved ususually from topeni (maple),neshiko (walnut) and other woods. Owners carved personal patterns distinctive of the Ainu on the sheaths and attached ornaments of great originality. Makiri were an inseparable part of the Ainu wardrobe and were carefully worn from the owner's belt everywhere he went.
