Miyagawa Makuzu Kozan I/II Rare Duck Koro, c.1915-20
This incredible rare one of a kind koro (incense burner), in the form of a duck, is molded beautifully, the bird with a long bill and beautiful head, with molded feathers reaching to the back upright tail, the web feet exposed on the bottom, the koro lid typically pierced with depicting the feathered wings, all covered by a rich celadon glaze. Condition: Perfect with no evidence of restoration, chips, cracks, hairlines, or repairs. Dimensions: Length 8.5 inches, Widest Width 4.5 inches, Height 3.75 inches. The base unglazed bearing the mark MAKUZU, made in the Taisho Period, c. 1915-20. It appears that the piece had Hanzan's hands attached to it, later known as Makuzu Kozan II, and we feel that it is a transition type piece that could have been made in the last years of Kozan I's life, or at the beginning of the period of Kozan II’s succession. This is the only model of this koro that we have seen in over 30 years handling pieces by Kozan. MIYAGAWA KOZAN I (1842-1916) - together with Seifu, one of the two most important artists of the MEIJI PERIOD.Honored as the second ceramic artist, in 1896, to be designated an Imperial Court Artist, Kozan was specifically noted for not only his objects depicting naturalistic designs in porcelain and earthenware, but also his molded ware, in various medium and coloration, which are quite rare in this form, and also in the blue and white and Chinese wucai style. These type pieces are truly extraordinary, and the number of molded pieces produced amounted to only a small fraction of the output of the Kozan studio. Upon his death he was succeeded by his son Hanzan who became Miyagawa Kozan II (1859-1940).For more information and photos, please go to our website listed on our Trocadero home page, or pasting in your browser the following URL: www.normarorientalart.com/miyagawa_kozan_iii_rare_celadon_duck_koro_c1915-20
