The Apache Indians of central Arizona are world famous for their basketry skills. One hundred years ago the women wove coiled willow trays that were as sturdy as pottery. But trade goods like pots and pans and buckets took the place of those, so today, the only baskets being produced on the San Carlos Reservation are burden baskets, which were used as a back pack for carrying heavy loads (by the women). Twined construction of squaw bush and willow with leather thongs and tin cones. The jingles are there for the beautiful sound they make. Notice the design is opposite color inside the basket, the red is the bark left on the willow, the white is peeled. Handcrafted by Apache Indian basket weaver Cecilia Henry, in the 1970s, this is a small traditional burden basket. Dimensions are 6 1/2 inches across and 7 1/4 inches deep. Hang this near an open window and hear the tinkling of the tin cones in the breeze. Burden baskets make wonderful gifts with the wish "put all your burdens in here". Buyer pays $12.00 for shipping.
