A Koyemsi Kachina is carved as a puppet in the traditional style by Hopi Indian artist Dean Howato, son of Walter Howato.

Dean carved and painted Kachinas with his father for over thirty years and has a similar style, yet his own touches.

This 6 1/2" tall cottonwood root carving is very simple, yet complex with pegged joints and string to manipulate like a marionette. He is seated in a chair and can beat his drum, or stand to call the dances.

We know of no one else who is making Kachina puppets, and these are charming!
