Beautiful and elegant Avanyu painted bowl by Maria Martinez and Popovi Da, August 1967. The classic high shouldered jar is hand crafted by Maria, stone burnished, then decorated with the Water Serpent by Popovi Da. Together they pit fired the pottery to a deep lustrous black.

The classic black pottery jar by Maria Martinez and Popovi Da, created during the 1950s.

Traditionally hand crafted with native clay by Maria, stone burnished to a high shine, then decorated with the feather design by her son Popovi Da. Together they pit fired their pottery to the deep black using wood and dried sheep dung.

Graceful pottery bowl shaped by the hands of Maria Martinez, polished and painted by Santana, her daughter in law. Together they made nice pottery after Julian passed in 1943, until Popovi Da partnered with his mother in the 1950s.

Nampeyo, the most famous American Indian potter, from Hano, First Mesa, Hopi, Arizona. Born around 1860, died 1942, Nampeyo is the matriarch of a large family of expert potters spanning many generations. Her pottery is prized in fine museums and private collections worldwide!

Beautiful ivory colored clay is expertly formed into the classic Nampeyo shape! This small Hopi pottery jar is 4" tall by 7 1/4" diameter. In fine original condition with no restoration, the jar is from circa 1920. Probably painted by Annie as Nampeyo was loosing her eyesight.

Note the painted stepped clouds above the Sityatki design and also the knots below. Wonderful polychrome on the light clay. ...click for details

Mojave Indian pottery jar made in the old style by Annie Fields, b.1884-d.1971. This double faced vessel with four holes and a handle is in excellent original condition.

Old polychrome lidded basket by Chitimacha Indian artist Faye Stouff. Double woven, round to square, plaited with rivercane, dyed and natural, this two piece basket is of top quality workmanship.

Dimensions are 5" tall total, the cup is 3 3/4" deep by 3" across, the lid is 2" tall by 3 1/2" across.

Very fine small Chitimacha Indian basket woven by Lydia Darden, circa 1960s. Natural and vegetal dyed rivercane are plaited into a round to square bowl. The design is called "fish vertebrae".

Dimensions are 2 3/4" deep by 4" wide. An average of ten wefts per inch.
