Traditionally hand built with coils of native clay, plates were the most difficult to make successfully, but Maria was adept! A fine drying crack is apparent on the back, it is superficial and stable.
Stone burnished red slip is painted with a buff slip, by Po, to create the outlines of the classic feathers, with four lines encircling as a border. Pit fired out doors, no smoke clouds or hot spots. One tiny pop out almost looks like a tiny crystal impurity in the clay.
There is no firing date but a sticker tag says 1952, Popovi began dating his pieces in the mid-1950s. Signed by both.
This is as wonderful as it gets for pottery by the most famous Mother and Son potters of all times!
