Rare Early Polychrome Bowl Marie and Julian Martinez
A rare and wonderful polychrome jar from around 1915 by Marie and Julian, the most famous husband and wife artists of San Ildefonso Pueblo.

Known for their beautiful biscuit ware way before they became famous for the black on black pottery, this small flat shouldered jar is a fine example of that era.

Although unsigned, it has a letter of provenance From Richard Spivey, author and expert on Maria pottery. There is a very similar bowl, pictured in his book on page 13, that was gifted to the New Mexico Museum in 1935.

Note the very sophisticated layout of the poychrome painted design when viewed from above, way more modern than anything else being done at that time. Julian was an exceptional artist!

3" tall by 6 3/4" diameter. Fine original condition, no chips or cracks.

Buyer pays $30.00 for shipping and insurance.
