| Having worked for years at Spratling's, Los Castillo's and Margot de Taxco's, whose workshop he ended up managing, Miguel Melendez created a gorgeous line of jewelry under his own name as well, most of them in slick, smoothly flowing mod designs. Presented here is a classic pin/pendant piece of his in a floral form with two layers of pointy leaves and a prong-set, stunning color-change sapphire at the center. The pendant is accompanied by a beautifully hand-crafted sterling silver chain with long paper-clip links. Color-change sapphire, as its name implies, changes colors under different light situations thus resembling alexandrite, so many good Taxco talleres used it in their jewelry. The stone here is burgundy red in natural light but as you can see it becomes steely purple under studio lighting... The pendant is 2 1/8" in diameter with the chain being 24" long. The sapphire's diameter is 1/2" and the set weighs 35.5 grams. The pendant is marked with Miguel's initial "m" in script alongside Eagle 3 assay mark and "MADE IN MEXICO" "TAXCO" as well as "925"". The chain is not marked but guaranteed sterling and hand-made. Dating in the 1950s-60s and in excellent vintage condition. | ||
