African Ashanti brass lost wax bronze chief riding in a palanquin. This wonderful "Ashanti brass sculpture" came to us from an important African Art collection. This vintage or antique sculpture measures 4 and one eighth inches long, 2 and one eighths inches wide and 3 inches high. There is a piece missing on the back rim which is very typical for this period of mask. This head is Kiganda. This is tricky: the tribe is Buganda; their name for people and things is Kiganda; an individual is a Muganda; and their language is Luganda. One can understand why they are now simply referred to as Ganda. The Ganda are the most important ethnic group in Uganda (a country in East Africa). The head is of mvuli wood but it is not a traditional carving. We would hesitate to call it a Ganda head although it was certainly made by someone from Uganda probably around 1950 or so. ...click for details
