This head is Kiganda. This is tricky: the tribe is Buganda; their name for people and things is Kiganda; an individual is a Muganda; and their language is Luganda. One can understand why they are now simply referred to as Ganda. The Ganda are the most important ethnic group in Uganda (a country in East Africa). The head is of mvuli wood but it is not a traditional carving. We would hesitate to call it a Ganda head although it was certainly made by someone from Uganda probably around 1950 or so. ...click for details

Ashanti Chieftain's chair of wood and stretched hide, with hammered brass tack and bell shape applied decorations. This 19th century chair from the Ghana, in western Africa, shows in its form the influence of the Portuguese traders who were actively trading in the region in the 17th century.
