This is a gorgeous sterling silver necklace and earrings designed by noted Taxco silversmith Antonio Castillo. The “Pre Hispanic Serpent” design of this necklace and earrings is rare and wonderful. It measures 19 ½” long; each serpent head is 4” long by 1” wide. There are three pieces of the necklace that make up another necklace without the serpent heads. Thus you are buying two necklaces for the price of one. The hook clasp is simple and efficient. The earrings are screw backs in good working order. Circa 1940s the necklace and earrings are in excellent vintage condition, wear from normal use, and no abuse. Hallmarks read: LOS CASTILLO TAXCO STERLING 344 (maybe the design number) as shown in photo. Antonio Castillo was an apprentice at Las Delicias, William Spratling's silver taller, from 1931 to 1939 when he and his brothers left to form their own company: "Los Castillo". *******ORIGINAL OLD MATL, Pre 1960******** this is an early original Matilde Poulat design, hallmarked MATL (see photo of hallmark). Matilde Poulat was a Mexico City artist who opened her shop in 1934. Her jewelry designs are distinctively native jewelry in Mexico, intensely Mexican and distinctively her own. Matl was a contemporary of William Spratling, Hector Aguilar, Antonio Pineda, Los Castillo as well as Margot de Taxco. This rare silver with turquoise and amethyst cabochons comb is absolutely beautiful. The design elements in this comb, based on symbols of the Aztec or Pre-Hispanic motifs, are wonderful. The comb is hollow, done in the technique know as repoussage, backed in silver and measures 4 ¾ inches by 1 ¼ inches. The two bird’s eyes are turquoise as well as the oval cabochons on each end. The center amethyst cabochon is just under ½ inch diameter. I have not tested the silver content, however, from experience these are at least 925 silver. The plastic and silver portions of the comb are in excellent vintage condition wear from normal use, no abuse. Email or call with your questions, thanks for your interest.
