Japanese Late EDO or Early MEIJI Period lacquer writing box with design of peonies and KARAKUSA design done in gold and black lacquer on a NASHIJI background. Silk ties with tassels are attached to the sides of the box onto the metal hardware. The hardware has the butterfly MON design on them. 3 3/8" wide by 9 3/8" long by 1 3/4" high.
