Japanese Mid 20th Century WAKASA ware lacquer tray
Japanese Mid 20th Century WAKASA ware lacquer tray. Beautifully made of a wooden base (you can see the wood grain on the back of the tray) with a fan design in mother of pearl, gold leaf and fine eggshell inlays. This tray also has a gold lacquer trim at the edge. Japanese art historians' research indicate that WAKASA ware was first created 400 years ago. The name WAKASA refers to WAKASA Bay, in Fukui Prefecture, where this type of lacquerware has been made for centuries and continues to be made today. 10 1/2" diameter by 1" depth.
