Japanese Mid 19th C. Lacquer Box by Nakamura Soutetsu

Japanese mid 19th century lacquer poem card box by master lacquer artist NAKAMURA SOUTETSU (1828-1884), 8th generation of master artists. The box is done in various lacquer techniques with the design of clouds and butterflies. The box comes with TOMOBAKO, original wooden artist signed storage box. On the outside of the TOMOBAKO it says KUMO TO CHO MAKIE SHISHIKI BAKO, meaning cloud and butterfly design lacquered poem card box. Inside it is signed CHOUU with seal. CHOUU was one of the artist names used by NAKAMURA SOUTETSU. He received the bronze prize at the Philadelphia Centennial Expo in 1876. The box measures 8 1/8" wide, 9 3/8" length and 1 7/8" height.
