A large and heavy double-sided bronze gong in the form of a vertical drum, perhaps intended for use in a Shinto ceremony.
Each part of the gong and stand has been made using the lost wax technique and this has led to the use of much fine decoration on the surface. The base plate is cast with the maker's name and origin, “Seikyo Yoshida Zo.” Yoshida made this ...click for details
A JAPANESE EXPORT PORCELAIN CHAMBER POT, CIRCA 1700.
An Arita export European form chamber pot, early 18th century. It has been badly cracked in the past and rivets have been used to strengthen the repair. The use of rivets in this case demonstrates what a high value was placed on these early imported porcelains from the East. Nice for a flower display.

A rare Arita porcelain urinal made for export to the West, probably the Netherlands, at the beginning of the 18th century. This is not the kind of export item encountered often so perhaps it was made as the result of a private commission by a trader. A Japanese brocaded textile purse featuring a design of a dragon, complete with a matching dragon clasp and kagamibuta netsuke. Inside, the lining is printed leather. The netsuke is probably celluloid, not real ivory. This dates the purse after 1870 when the material was invented, circa 1900 perhaps.

Bizen yaki is high-fired and unglazed stoneware, it relies on differing kiln conditions for ...click for details
Monju Bosatsu - Manjushri Bodhisattva of Wisdom. The painting appears to have great age and even though not in the best of condition it still has a compelling presence. It is painted on a composite sheet of thin paper, the joins can be seen as angled lines across the sheet and mounted as a kakemono. The painting is signed with a single seal impression in gold.

An attractive painting on silk of a beautiful Japanese girl who attends to her toilette oblivious to her dishabille. The kakemono is beautifully and simply painted. It was probably painted in the earlier part of the 20th century. I hesitate to classify this charming picture as 'shunga', it seems altogether too innocent. bijinga perhaps.
