A GOOD ISLAMIC BRONZE VASE, 19TH CENTURY OR EARLIER.

An elegant cast bronze vase sparingly engraved with scrolls and flowers. It looks as if the deeper engraving has been filled with black lacquer so perhaps this vase is from Kashmir. The vase is substantially cast and finished on a lathe before engraving.

The bronze depicts Krishna subduing the poisonous Naga (snake) Kaliya. Having assumed the entire weight of the universe Krishna dances on Kaliya’s heads until Kaliya’s wives plead for him to be spared.

A BRASS PANDAN, INDIA, 17TH CENTURY. .

Pandan is the name for the container of the various constituents of ‘pan’, a sliver of betel nut applied with lime paste and wrapped in a betel leaf. The early pandans do not have any divisions inside and it is thought that they were for holding the ‘quids’ of prepared pan. An Indian brass cylindrical box and cover profusely decorated with Hindu gods within Nandi borders. The metal is of a decent gauge giving the box a substantial feel, much heavier than the thin tourist work. The work is reminiscent of that from Benares. 19th century.
