This is a candidate for this week’s mystery item. Obviously a dragon of some kind, it has been cast in bronze using the lost wax method; indeed the artisan’s fingerprints are recorded forever underneath the triangular tail. A fine carved and painted marble sculpture of the Hindu deity Hanuman, the monkey god and hero of the Hindu epic, the Ramayana. He is holding his mace in one hand and the Sanjeevi Parvatham in the other. From northern India, mid 19th century.

7 inches (17.7cm) high, 3.5/8 inches (9.2cm) wide. Perfect condition. For this genre the sculpture is in unusually good condition, most are found badly broken. ...click for details

AN ISLAMIC SILVER AND TURQUOISE PENDANT, 19TH CENTURY.

The pendant is formed of two hexagonal cylinders hinged together and held rigid by a swinging suspension loop at the top and a hinged bar at the bottom. The front and sides are encrusted with turquoise stone of circular and gul form, the back engraved with flowers. No marks.

A RARE PAIR OF BRONZE PALANQUIN FINIALS, INDIA 19TH CENTURY OR EARLIER.

These cast bronze finials were mounted on the ends of the carrying handles of a palanquin. Each appears to be in the form of a tiger’s head and the both have pierced holes in the necks for fixing to the shafts.
