A FINE & UNUSUAL JAPANESE POTTERY TOKKURI, 19TH CENTURY.
This stoneware tokkuri is moulded which is a bit of a tour de force given its large size. I have never been able to identify the pottery. It is quite thinly moulded and must be fairly high fired. The tea set decorated in enamels with butterflies and netting on a typical finely crackled body.

This tokkuri is presented just how it was found, shabby chic! Three sides feature a bird and flower picture inscribed directly into the unfired clay, signed with a single character. A very impressive Japanese Bizen tokkuri, the body shaped like a short length of bamboo with a shoot bursting from the side. It displays an impressive show of random markings created during the firing. The purposely squashed sides enable the tokkuri to be comfortably held in one hand. Edo period, late 18th century.
