‘BISHOP’S BONE’ or ‘WESLEY’. EARLY 19TH CENTURY
A natural bone cleverly painted to depict a clerical figure, perhaps the famous preacher John Wesley. A similar example is illustrated in: Brears, P., 1989. North Country Folk Art. pp.225, Edinburgh: John Donald There is a brief description on p.204 and details of some occurrences on p.206 Let me quote: “Various stories connected them with oxen, or even with whales in fishing communities, but recently they have been positively identified by Professor Alexander of Leeds University as the sixth cervical vertebrae of large horses such as heavy hunters, Shires or Clydesdales, thus explaining their appearance in saddlers' shops and farmhouses in agricultural areas.” Brears illustrates an example on p.205 They are believed to have been made in the first decades of the nineteenth century. 5.7/8” high. Tip of one hand missing and the odd ancient chip. Otherwise fine. |
