A BRONZE ‘NANDI’, INDIA, 17TH CENTURY.
Nandi, the sacred bull, is the mount of the god Shiva and represents strength, faith, and constancy in belief. Images of Nandi often sit directly outside a shrine to Shiva, facing the deity. Here Nandi is depicted standing, wearing two necklaces complete with bells. On his back he carries a lota that is actually an opening into the body, perhaps for incense sticks. 17th century. 4.1/8 inches high, fine original condition. The casting has not quite filled out the tip of the nose, the black core is exposed there and so it is hardly noticeable.
