A very impressive Japanese Bizen tokkuri, the body shaped like a short length of bamboo with a shoot bursting from the side. It displays an impressive show of random markings created during the firing. The purposely squashed sides enable the tokkuri to be comfortably held in one hand. Edo period, late 18th century.
The base carries a simple impressed potters mark. According to the book, "Bizen ware. A Catalogue of the Chater Collection" by James Orange (Yokohama 1916), this mark was used by a potter named Tongu Saburobei who worked in the Meiwa Period (1764-72). 9.1/4 inches (23.5cm) high. Perfect condition. I am based in the United Kingdom so charges made to credit cards are in GBP ( British Pounds ) and your credit card issuer automatically converts the charge to your own currency, that is, the currency of your country. Payment may also be made by direct bank transfer in GBP, or in cash, GBP or US$. International Money Orders or Cashiers’ Checks in GBP are also accepted. |
