A FINE JAPANESE WOODBLOCK KABUKI PRINT BY UENO TADAMASA. 1941
This fine design is part of a series entitled Eighteen Kabuki Makeups (Kabuki kumadori juhachi ban) published by the celebrated publisher, Watanabe Shozaburo in 1941, this design titled "the Two Line Makeup of Matsuo. This was a superb series of which this design is probably the most striking. Tadamasa Ueno (1904-1970) is known for his dramatic kabuki actor prints, recognisably Ukiyoe but also undeniably part of the Shin Hanga movement. He studied from an early age with Torii Kiyotada and was entitled to call himself Torii Tadamasa. The Torii family was a long line of artists closely associated with the kabuki theater and with printmaking since the 17th century. 16 x 10 3/4 ins. (40.7 x 27.3 cms) The print is superbly printed, like all Watanabe's productions, and is in fine condition with no damage and no repairs. Please study the photographs.
