A Chinese porcelain bowl with flaring lip incised and decorated with enamels on the previously unglazed but once-fired biscuit body. These brinjal bowls have always been thought of as Kangxi wares but recent scholarship suggests a late Ming Tianqi (1621~1627) date for them. Within the foot-rim is an engraved former owner’s mark, dong (winter).

Please note that in reality the colour of the yellow ground is closer to an egg yolk hue.

Approximately 4.5/8 inches (11.7 cm) diameter, 2.1/2 inches (6.3cm) high. These thinly made bowls are almost always found with hairline cracks, this example is no exception though the two hairlines that this bowl has have now been professionally stabilised and the bowl rings well when tapped with a finger. I have been able to show both sides of one crack in the photographs, indeed it can also be seen rising from the topmost brown leaf in the 2nd picture. The second hairline is very short and I have been unable to find it again, let alone photograph it. Please study the photographs.
