| This Fantastic Oil on Canvas, “Before Plowing the Land,” c. 1890, oil on canvas, by Belgian artist Isidore Verheyden (1846-1905) is in Excellent Condition. This painting in the original gilt frame and signed in the lower right corner by the artist. Verheyden’s father was the painter Jean-François Verheyden, and he trained at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Bruxelles, where he was taught by Joseph Quinaux (1822 - 1895). Quinaux, who took his pupils on long walks in the countryside around Bruxelles, first instilled a love of nature in Verheyden. In 1866 Verheyden entered the studio of Jean-François Portaels, where he met several artists, such as Edouard Agneesens and Emile Wauters, who were keen to break with academic tradition. Verheyden first exhibited in 1870 with a number of portraits. His work can be seen in the Bruxelles museum, Musées royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique.
