This dark high fire clay miniature was probably made in the Shiwan Kilns. Sometimes these are called mud men, but this one is more refined and a denser brown clay. It is about 2 1/8" tall. Very fine details on face and hands with all fingers intact. It came from a warehouse in China that had a stock ranging from about 30 years to over a century old. I pick the best from the importer who deals directly with the carvers in a village work shop in China. He tells me that the skeletons are the most time consuming to carve. Only the old skilled carvers can do them. He does not get this quality of carving today. His old carvers are not working anymore.
