Really beautiful and skilled carving in this small Ojimi bead about 1" long and 1" tall. Mastadons are quite extince so the ivory is legal and has the same grain as elephant ivory, color tends to be a little more yellow. Beautiful grain on this piece. A Chinese copy of a Japanese bead for the Netsuke and Inro box worn by Samurai. A true collectible, could be worn on a cord.

This is a newer carving from Mastadon [long dead]tusk. It was done by a very skilled carver as you can see from the photos. It has a rat on a cat with a bell. "Belling the Cat" Japanese style and design, but the carving was done in China. It is just under 1" long. A wonderful collectible, could be put on a necklace, but original intent was to go with a Netsuke and Inro case. Fine carvers are as endangered as the living elephant, and pieces like this beauty are much harder to find ...click for details

A very odd snuff bottle. Very high carving done on three layers of Peking glass. The top layer is yellow and almost 3/8" deep. Three heads of Monks or buddhas. Green and white layers underneath. Very nice artistic design. I have never seen one like this and it does stand out as a tiny piece of art. It has carnelian top with bone spoon. It is about 3 1/8" tall. I am not sure of age, I would estimate it is a decade old, or newer. Great item for a collection.

A beautiful and skilled copy of a Japanese wood netsuke. This is an Oni [demond] with a lantern on his head. It is true to the Japanese original which is worth thousands of dollars, this one was hand carved in China and is a fraction of the cost, for a very fine copy that looks like the original. It is 4" tall and about a decade old. These were done in very small numbers and this is the only one of this type I have seen, it is a great piece of work.

When the Japanese first met with Europeans, they were Dutch Merchants. Here is a remarkable recreation of that first meeting. This is a Chinese carved hardwood netsuke that is a very faithful copy of a Japanese original that is priceless. You see a Dutch merchant with his traditional hat and he holds a goat, they brought livestock with them. This top quality Chinese carving was done over a decade ago. There are few or no skilled carvers left in China, so this copy will continue to climb in value ...click for details
