| A monumental, mysterious, and beautiful vintage Mexican silver and amethyst brooch. Some pieces merit a collector's attention for their design and artistry. Some pieces merit a collector's attention for their art historical import. This piece merits a collector's attention for both reasons. It artistry is superb. Rich repousse floral design whose 'stamens' are finished with three large amethyst cabochons of graduating size. Its art historical import is multiple. It is a piece that resembles strongly the very early brooch of Antonio Pineda found at p. 101 of "Silver Seduction". So close is the resemblance that one must suspect that this earlier design was one with which Antonio was familiar. It is marked Silver and Mexico; and, I suspect, is a ca. 1930s/early 1940s unmarked Davis piece. I also would tend to think, given the semblance to the later Antonio piece and Antonio's early homages to the designs by his beloved mentor Valentin Vidaurreta, that this is indeed a Valentin Vidaurreta piece made during his Mexico City time. Measuring a monumental 3 1/2" by 3"; and in excellent vintage condition. A beautiful, important work. | ||||||||
