Here is a very rare and splendid red-eyed dragonfly, most likely from Germany. It is sterling silver with a gold wash, and marked “STERLING” and “DEPOSE”. There is also a partial maker’s mark, possibly for Meyle & Mayer, who were producing enameled jewelry in Germany at the turn of the last century. The plique shades from yellow through turquoise to a dark blue. A few of the central plique panels have some cracking (fairly standard for these lovely old pieces), but almost no bubbles (not so ...click for details

A very lovely orchid realized in rich 14kt yellow gold, this pin has detailed gold work, an Old European Cut diamond (etw .30 - .35), and a fan pearl. It is 1” by about 7/8”, is quite dimensional, and SO Nouveau! It is unmarked, but based on its construction and the gold content, I believe it was made in Newark, NJ. There is a minor problem with one of the petals - it is detached at its central anchor point, but is firmly attached to the pin apparatus. My jeweler told me that it doesn’t actually ...click for details

This stunning and quintessentially Art Nouveau ring will make you very happy, if you love beautiful ladies' faces. It weighs 3.5 grams and is approximately size 7. The accent diamond is of an older cut. The lady’s face measures approximately 1/2” x 5/8”. A small bit of the setting was broken, so I have had it laser soldered. The jeweler who did the soldering told me he thought this piece actually comes out of the 1970s Art Nouveau Revival. I really don’t know if he is correct or not, but men ...click for details

Small but fierce, these mythological critters make a statement. The decorative pieces are ½”, the “torpedoes” are ¾”, and the chains linking them ¾”. The workmanship is very fine, dimensional and detailed. Stamped FIX for the heavy 18k gold plating used by the French in the Nouveau era, they have something stamped on the middle link of each chain. I can’t read it, but I believe it is a maker’s mark. The gold has worn off of the high points a bit, but not badly; it looks as though the torpedoes w ...click for details

Here is a pair of Art Nouveau cuff links, each featuring a maiden in profile, surrounded by a wave motif. The fronts measure 11/16 x 9/16”. They test 14k, and are marked 14k, however the marks are on the backs. It looks to me like the fronts were soldered onto these backs later for some reason. You can see the soldering lines in the photos. Regardless, they are quite lovely. The 2 cuffs weigh in at 4.5g or 0.16oz. Circa 1900.

Here we have a rare Art Nouveau/Victorian cross-over piece. The Victorians had a fad for using real insects, particularly these green beetles (possibly the Florida tortoise beetle), in jewelry. The Nouveau folk loved naturalistic motifs, but generally didn’t use the insect itself – and the design of the pin is totally Nouveau. It is also rare because beetle jewelry is becoming very hard to find these days. This pin is marked 14k, and is a lovely pale gold with which the beetle’s dark green contr ...click for details

These gorgeous brooches come along so rarely, and it is rarer still to find one with an enameled face! This face is one that I associate with Krementz, but there is no maker’s mark. She is graced with black eyebrows, red lips and delicately tinted cheeks. Her face is surrounded by tendrils of gold, the top ones being set with 34 seed pearls of varying shades. There is a tiny accent diamond of an old cut. It is a watch pin, and the C clasp is marked 14k (the 4 is barely discernable, so I tested i ...click for details

This elegant yet simple ring has been attributed to Maurice Dufrene, one of the important French designers of the Art Nouveau era. Dufrene really loved the ginko motif (see “The Paris Salons, 1895-1914, Jewelry I: The Designers A-K,” by Alastair Duncan), and this ring features one, as well as a pearl (either natural or cultured), in a very Nouveau setting. The mark looks like it might say “18k”. No other marks. It has been sized, and is a 6-1/4. Other than a faint line where the sizing was done, ...click for details

Here is a petit gold-filled locket depicting a maiden, her face and shoulders peeping up from the water, with a swan swimming by. The girl’s hair ripples down to become the frame for the scene - they are silhouetted against a sunrise. Sweet! The locket measures ¾” and weighs 4.0g. The rings and celluloid are in place for 2 photos. Signed “C Q & R” in a triangle, for Carter, Qvarnstrom (Quarnstrom?) & Remington of Attleboro, MA. In very good condition – just a little discoloration of the ...click for details
