Plique a Jour Leaf Pin, Paste Accents, Art Nouveau
This charming brooch is not in perfect shape, but it still has much to recommend it – it’s very pretty and wearable. Plique a jour jewels are very hard to come by these days – as you may know, they are somewhat fragile, rare, and I believe that a large percentage of them are now in collections. This piece, which seems to be a maple leaf, seems to be missing one leaf. The space was filled with a drop made of green agate. Along the main vein of each leaf and the stem are paste accent stones, and it is centered by a faux pearl. The plique itself is in good shape, with only a few hairline cracks - normal in all but the very best plique. The back is marked “STERLS”, presumably for sterling silver, for which it tests positive. Despite the missing leaf, this is still a lovely piece. It could use a light cleaning. It measures 1-1/8 x 1-1/8". Circa 1900. PLIQUE A JOUR (transl.: “light of day”) is an enameling process, by which the enamel is fired on a backing, and then the backing is removed, so that the enamel is translucent. It’s very difficult to do, and was perfected by Rene Lalique, the master jewelry of the Art Nouveau world.
