Chinese scholar’s wood desk screen of long rectangular form. The central panel of the table screen is designed with a wood bordered glass frame suitable for the display of a horizontal format painting or textile fragment. A removable wood back allows for easy insertion. The narrow stand is supported by two parchment scroll feet. 31”L x 13 ¾”H x 2 ½”D. Early 20th century. Very good overall condition with no chips or cracks in the glass and minor wear to the wood finish.
Limited-edition woodblock print by Clifton Karhu (1927-2007) titled “Tamba Snow” depicting a scene of traditional Japanese architecture in snow. The print is pencil-signed, titled, dated '77, and numbered 91/100 at the bottom of the circular image. An American artist, Karhu lived in Japan and trained in the traditional techniques of woodblock printmaking. In the sosaku hanga tradition, he designed, carved, and printed his own prints. Large Chinese dark purple-black Yixing pottery teapot with metal carrying handles. The lid is marked with "fu" (good fortune) and "kang" (good health) symbols. A square seal is on the center of the base and there is a tiny seal by the handles (see enlargements 9 & 10). The interior pouring spout has seven small holes which act as a strainer. Finely woven folk art textile from the Philippines. Possibly an example of a T'nalak bark cloth weaving from the T'boli tribe. The weaving hangs about 49" (plus 3" of fringe) in length from a decorative wood rod and is about 19 1/2" wide (32" including the wood rod). The top of the textile is decorated with red, white and black bead work accented with brass bells. Imported in the 1980's, this textile was stored safely away and has never been hung. Large Japanese cast iron tetsubin decorated on the front with a pattern of bamboo leaves. The lid has a globular form finial. It is marked at the side of the spout (see enlargement 3). Dark sheen to the cast iron. Appears to date from the mid-20th century. Measures about 9" to the top of the handle and 7 1/2" across to the tip of the spout. The handle moves slightly to either side and can stand up on its own. There is some rust evident in the interior.
Japanese cast iron tetsubin decorated with a traditional hailstone ("arare") pattern. The lid has a pine cone finial. Appears to date from the mid-20th century. Measures about 6 1/2" to the top of the handle and 6 1/2" across to the tip of the spout. The handle remains in an upright position. The interior has a few small areas of rust evident.
