Chinese Qing dynasty ornately carved rootwood fly-whisk handle. Fly-whisks were carried by Buddhist priests to wave away flies which, according to Buddhist tenets, they could not kill. Chinese scholar's desk root wood sculpture carved with two scholars conversing among trees and rockery. The projecting "finger" appears to be carved in the form of Guanyin, although the face is barely apparent (see enlargement 11). This sculpture is crafted from a fairly hard wood. Two Chinese 19th century Minyao ("people's ware") dishes decorated in underglaze blue with lotus flowers and scrolling foliage against a white porcelain ground.
