Pair of late Qing cylindrical form mao tong (hat stands) pierced with decorative holes decorated in underglaze blue and white slip with figural scenes on a light brown crackled ground. A square brown apocryphal “Cheng Hua” mark is on the base. Circa 1900. 11 3/8” high x 4 7/8” diameter. Excellent condition. Tall Chinese famille verte Kangxi revival porcelain rouleau vase decorated with scenes from the Chinese literary classic “Romance of the Three Kingdoms.” 17 ¾” high. Dates from the early Republican period to possibly late Qing (Guangxu). Finely painted and in very good overall condition. The base was drilled for a lamp.
A fine example of Osaka cabinetry, this large Japanese sho-dana (shelf tansu) crafted of karaki wood (rosewood) features drawer fronts and doors decorated in silver wire inlay. The double doors at the bottom left open to reveal a single horizontal shelf separating two equal sized shelf compartments. The sliding doors at the top open to a single storage commpartment. Qing Dynasty (19th century) Chinese Manchu style robe decorated in embroidered dragons chasing flaming pearls (symbolizing the Buddhist notion of enlightenment) executed in gold-couched thread on a blue silk ground. Japanese woodblock print by Taiso Yoshitoshi (1839-1892) titled "A Poem about a Broken Bucket" from the series "One Hundred Aspects of the Moon" dated 1889. The image depicts the 18th century poetess Chiyo illustrating one of her most notable poems. The bottom of the filled bucket has fallen out leaving no home for the reflected moon in the water. A single bat hovers below the sun at the upper right. This Mandarin square would have been worn by the wife of a 5th rank civil official. “Yazama Jujiro Moto-oki Blowing a Whistle” from the series “Stories of the Faithful Samurai” signed at the right "Ichiyusai Kuniyoshi ga" (1797-1861). The red Yoshi Kiri seal is beneath the signature. The print was published by Ebiya Rinnosuke in 1848.
