| Chinese rectangular form carved red cinnabar lacquer box. The rounded lid is finely decorated in the 18th century style with a central panel featuring a scene of figures (possibly Daoist immortals) in pleasure boats and standing on the bank of a lake in a garden setting surrounded by pavilions and traditional buildings. A geometric key-fret border separates the central pattern from a dense design of branches with leaves and blossoms on the sides. The rim is metal and the interior and base are black. The cinnabar lacquer retains the warm dark reddish-brown color indicative of its age. 19th century. Measures 5 ¾”L x 4”W x 2 1/8”H. There is one small crack in the lacquer on the lid (see enlargement 7). There is a slight amount of damage to the interior of one corner (see enlargement 12) and there are some scattered small losses to the lacquer on the interior and base. This piece is from a Tucson, Arizona estate. | |||||||||||||||
