Chinese Qing Guangxu Blue White Straits Sweet Pea Basin
$400

Chinese late Qing dynasty Guangxu period porcelain wash basin decorated in underglaze blue with leafy vines and sweet pea flowers set against a white ground with a pale blue tint. An abstract pattern is at the interior base. The exterior holds three sparse groupings of grasses. There is kiln grit adhering to the foot rim. The base is glazed but the foot rim is unglazed. This type of decoration with a sweet pea floral background was produced for the Straits Chinese communities and is also referred to as blue and white nonya ware or "Shanghai ware" (see “Straits Chinese Porcelain: A Collector’s Guide” by Ho Wing Meng). Very good overall condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs. There is a small production flaw on the base (see enlargement 10). 11 ¾” diameter x about 4 1/4” high. Late 19th century to early 20th century. This vase is from the private collection of a former American diplomat to Guangzhou and Beijing from 1983-1987.
