| Chinese Qing dynasty baluster form porcelain lidded jar decorated in underglaze blue on a creamy white geyao style crackled ground with beauties in a fenced garden setting engaged in the fine arts. Two of the beauties hold a long scrolled painting which is stretched out between them. The lid is original to the jar and is decorated in underglaze blue leafy plants. Brown incised bands encircle the shoulder, base, and edge of the lid. The geyao style crackle glaze lines the interior and base. The foot rim and interior rim of the lid are unglazed. This vase is characteristic of brown etched wares produced between 1880 and 1920. The brown decoration is believed to have been intended to imitate bronze metal elements. These wares are also referred to as “Nanking wares.” 19th century. 9” high x about 5” diameter. Very good overall condition. There is one tiny nick in the glaze at the interior mouth which might be a burst bubble from the original firing (see enlargement 12). Please note that the background is more cream-colored and less white than the images suggest. This jar is from a Tucson, Arizona estate. | |||||||||||||||
