| "Maisaka (Station 31)" depicting a beauty stopping to rest and smoke a pipe from the series "Fifty-three Illustrations of the Tokaido" by Ando Hiroshige (1797-1858). This series depicts various beauties of the Koka Era placed against backgrounds of famous places. Dates 1844-1848. This is not a later edition or reproduction. It is a guaranteed original woodblock print by Hiroshige. The colors are exceptionally fresh and vibrant. This series is illustrated on pages 70-71 (Fig. 4 & 5) of "Hiroshige: Japan's Great Landscape Artist" by Isaburo Oka, Kodansha, 1992. Standard vertical oban print measuring about 14 1/2"V x 10"H. The censor seals and signature are at the right side of the image. The publisher's seal is at the bottom left. Very good impression and condition. The image is clearly visible on the back.
