Japanese Edo Woodblock Print Kuniyoshi 47 Ronin Samurai

“Yazama Jujiro Moto-oki Blowing a Whistle” from the series “Stories of the Faithful Samurai” signed at the right "Ichiyusai Kuniyoshi ga" (1797-1861). The red Yoshi Kiri seal is beneath the signature. The print was published by Ebiya Rinnosuke in 1848. This series features each of the historical forty-seven ronin (masterless samurai) who avenged the death of their lord in 18th century Japan. Vertical oban size measuring about 14 1/2"V x 10"H. Very good color and overall condition. There is a small repair to the paper at the upper right corner. Minor soiling and wear at the edges. The print has never been framed. It is not backed and the baren marks are clearly visible on the reverse. This image is illustrated and described as plate 1.13 in “Kuniyoshi: The Faithful Samurai” by David R. Weinberg, Hotei Publishing, Leiden, 2000.
