Japanese Woodblock Print Miki Suizan Arashiyama 1st Ed.
Rare Japanese first edition Taisho period "shin hanga" woodblock print titled “Arashiyama in Spring” from "The Second Series Selected Views of Kyoto" depicting three young girls in kimono strolling in a park beneath cherry blossoms by Miki Suizan (1887-1957) published in Taisho 14 (1925) by Sato Shotaro in an edition of 200. The black ink signature and red seal of the artist are at the lower right. The red seal of the publisher is on the back (see enlargement 6). Paper measures 15 3/4"V x 11"H (image: 15 1/2"V x 10 1/2"H). Very good overall condition. The paper is slightly toned and the green grass has faded. There is slight wrinkling of the paper at the top right corner and two small thinned areas at the upper corners which appear to have been caused by removal from a folder the print had been tipped to. Margins are evident at the top and right, which I believe is the way this image was originally printed. This print is illustrated on page 112, plate 145 of "The Female Image: 20th Century Prints of Japanese Beauties" by Amy Reigle Newland and Hamanaka Shinji, Hotei/ABE publishing, 2000.
