Chinese Qing Rose Mandarin Medallion Porcelain Export Wash Basin
19th century Chinese export porcelain wash basin decorated in the interior in the famille rose palette and gilt highlights with bird and flower reserves alternating with architectural settings featuring members of the gentry class at leisure. The panels encircle a matching central bird and flower medallion. The vignettes are reserved on a densely patterned ground permeated with butterflies, flowers, and foliage. The dense background extends along the top of the 1 1/2" wide canted rim. Three sprays of peony accent the white porcelain exterior. Measures 14 7/8" in diameter by 4 5/8" high. The basin is in very good overall condition with minor flaws and slight wear to the enamels and to the gilt at the center and rim. There is an old hairline near an original firing flaw at the side where it appears that pigment attached and was detached (see enlargements 11 & 12). A similar bathing basin is described and illustrated on page 68 (#183) of "Chinese Export Porcelain" by Nancy, Peter and Herbert Schiffer, Schiffer Publishing, 1975. According to Schiffer, bathing basins with black lines around the small vignettes with flowers are believed to have been made for the Boston market during the second half of the 19th century.
