Chinese Republic Metal Bed Warmer or Oil Container
Chinese metal bed warmer of compressed globular form with a handle at the top mounted on bosses and extending above a screw-top cover. The bosses provide a place for the handle to rest to prevent it from becoming too hot from the heated water inside. An example of this type of container can be found in Bonham's San Bruno, San Francisco Sale 18013 Catalogue - Asian Works of Art, 16 Mar 2010, Lot 8268 where it is is described as an oil container. Estimated to date from the early 20th century to possibly late 19th. Measures about 8 diameter by 4 high. Good overall condition with a nice patina. As the images show, there are a few dents in the base from use. This piece is from the private collection of American expatriates who lived in Hong Kong in the 1970s and 1980s.
