3 Japanese Lacquer Sake Cups 16-Petal Chrysanthemum
Set of three concentric stacking Japanese sakazuki (sake cups) for the marriage ceremony. Each sake cup is finely decorated in raised gold (takamakie) with a central 16-petal chrysanthemum (Imperial symbol) set against a red lacquered wood background. The sizes in diameter are 5 7/8", 5 , and 4 3/8. Estimated to date from the late Meiji to Taisho period (circa 1900 to 1925). The three sake cups are in very good condition. There is a tiny frit to the edge of the smallest cup and a small flaw to the foot edge of the largest cup. These flaws are much more obvious in the enlargement images than they are on the actual cups. This set is from a Tucson, Arizona estate.
