English School, c. 1880. A touching pair of portraits, both depicting Sub-Lieutenant John Dyer, Royal Navy. The first portrait, watercolour and graphite and set in an ebonized and gilt frame. Rectangular, 9 cms. X 7 cms. (3 ½ inches X 2 ½ inches). Written to the reverse, “Sub. Lieut John Dyer R.N./Killed in Action/on the Gold Coast about 1850/nephew of Mrs. Meredith/Grannie to CHS”. Johann Daniel Beyer (French, active 1820-1840). Watercolour portrait of Anna Geither wearing a blue dress with imbecile sleeves, white lace collar tied with a black bow, sash with a gold buckle, and a gold cross on a black ribbon. Signed and dated to the obverse, ”1837 Beyer”. Gilt-metal mount. The reverse also inscribed with the sitter’s name. Oval, 70 mm high (2 ¾ inches). Good condition.

Verre eglomise slip within turned and ebonized frame. Signed twice on the frame to the reverse, “Buxton Pinxt.” Oval, 7 cms. X 5 cms. (2 ½ inches X 2 inches). Miniature very good condition.
