| English School, (Early 20th Century) Oil on canvas. Portrait of Rachel Duberly in profile. Original Frame. Rectangular, 56 cms. X 47 cms.(22 inches X 18 1/2 inches). Rachel Duberly was the great niece of Fanny Duberly. Fanny Duberly (1829 - 1903). Fanny was the quintesential Victorian woman. Even though Fanny was raised in a society which frowned on women doing much more than sitting at home she marrying Captain Henry Duberly, an officer in the 8th Hussars. Because of lax military restrictions at the time, in 1855 Fanny was able to accompany her husband and his regiment when they went into battle in the Crimean War. Despite the dangers from cholera, having ridden through cannon fire and having witnessed the “charge of the Light Brigade,” Fanny was the only officer’s wife who stayed with the army during the length of that brutal campaign. It was while she was still camped in the Crimea that her first book, "Crimea Journal", became a runaway best-seller. | ||
