| Samuel Andrews, c. 1810 Watercolour on ivory. Portrait of an army officer in profile. Brass case. Glazed reverse reveals fabric. Oval, 5.5 cms. X 4.5 cms. (2 1/2inches X 1 3/4 inches). Samuel Andrews was probably born in Ireland, c.1767. In 1791 he applied to the East India Company for permission to go to Bengal in India. This application was refused, but he found some other way to travel there, because he arrived in Madras in that same year. In 1795 he moved into the house in which the premier Georgian miniature artist, John Smart, had formerly lived. He later moved to Calcutta and was there from 1798 onwards. He died in Patna in September 1807. Examples of his work are n the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. | |||||||
